Emaxesibeni athletes turn passion into purpose
A group of former learners ran 40km to give back to their school.
About 11 athletes and former students of Zwelakhe Senior Secondary in Emaxesibeni recently completed a 40km charity run from KwaBhaca.
The initiative was led by Luyanda “Coach Luya” Mgoduka, who organised the run to collect donations of sanitary pads for their former school.
Mgoduka and his fellow runners, who form part of XJ Athletic Club, said they value such independent initiatives as they not only promote the spirit of giving, but also strengthen their team’s identity.
“Giving is not just about making a donation, but about making a difference. It is time men learn to respect and support women. During our school days, some girls would miss school during their periods because they could not afford sanitary pads. We believe even the little we do can change that.”
Their initial goal was to donate 100 packs, but thanks to strong support from stakeholders, they collected 160 packs, with more donations still expected.
Mgoduka added that the run also forms part of preparations for upcoming competitions, with athletes Langelihle Thamela, Inga Gxoko and Aqhama Tanzi gearing up for the Cosacsca Track and Field National Championships, while others are preparing for the Comrades Marathon.
Zwelakhe Senior Secondary expressed heartfelt gratitude for the donation, noting that sport continues to have a positive impact in the community. The contribution is expected to go a long way in restoring dignity and confidence among female learners.
