ANC tells SACP members to declare campaign interests

The SACP has taken a decision to contest local government elections.

The African National Congress (ANC) has made it clear to South African Communist Party (SACP) members, who are in government by virtue of ANC membership, to declare whether they will campaign for the ANC or SACP in the upcoming local government elections.

This follows the SACP’s decision to contest the elections on its own, unlike previously where it contested under the banner of the ANC. This means if the SACP wins votes, it will have its own ministers, premiers, mayors, and councillors for the first time since the birth of democracy.

The ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) sent its member, Phumulo Masualle to the Tolomane Mnyayiza Region, where he addressed members of the ANC and relayed a message at the regional general council held at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre recently.

ANC regional spokesperson, Lindo Mzimela, said the message was clear as Masualle passed on the decisions of the NEC. He said: “The decisions of the ANC NEC were well received for implementation.”

He said as both ANC and SACP members are allowed to have dual membership, the NEC has taken a decision that a member of the ANC cannot contest elections under the banner of the SACP. If that does happen, the membership of that particular member will be terminated.

“A member is allowed to have dual membership, but they are not allowed to contest under another banner, for example, we cannot allow a member to use ANC resources to campaign against the ANC,” said Mzimela.
