Schools’ literacy competition in Harding tests isiZulu skills

The winners were awarded certificates.

Learners in Harding were duly acknowledged for their hard work in isiZulu literacy through a competition recently. It involved various schools, and encouraged learners to master isiZulu as their vernacular and home language.

Ugu Department of Education’s Nelisiwe Mthimkhulu said this competition encouraged learners to learn and read isiZulu with understanding as their vernacular language.

“I’m conducting isiZulu home language and literacy competitions for Grades 4 – 9. It’s a tour because I’m doing it in 17 education circuits of Ugu District. We have categories of spelling bee, language comprehension test, writing, story telling, essay writing, news bulletin reading, debate and literature. The competition started on April 2 and ended on May 6. Winning learners were awarded with certificates of appreciation.”

Mthimkhulu explained that the winners were as follows: Nqabeni Primary – comprehension test; Inkanyezi Yamachi Primary – spelling bee; Mzokhanyayo Primary – news bulletin reading; Harding State Aided Primary – debate; Mzukukela Primary – essay writing; along with other winners in various categories.
