Surfer claims silver at SA para surf champs

There were many cheers for the determined surfer.

There are two surfers with the name Sean Thompson that locals know about.

First up, of course, is former world champion Shaun Tomson, from Durban but who now lives overseas. He won the 1977 world title and has been a major influence in the sport since.

Locally, we have Sean Thompson, now 26 years old, and as a keen a surfer as you will find anywhere.

He recently claimed the silver medal in the South African Para Surf Championships, held at New Pier in Durban.

The champs were organised by Made For More and the Department of Sport.

Sean achieved second place in the All Inclusive Stand category and was delighted with his silver medal.

Joe de Billot from Durban took the gold, Nasr Esau the bronze with Frikkie de Klerk finishing fourth.

Sean was born with Down’s Syndrome but this has not stopped him taking part in and thoroughly enjoying surfing.

He has been a student at Heather Clark Surfing Adventures at St Mike’s for many years.

His philosophy is simple. If he’s battling with something, he reminds himself ‘it’s like surfing, just try again’.
