Makhoso protesters demand water, road upgrade

The community complained about the lack of water and the poor condition of an access road.

Angry residents of Makhoso in Ward 20 in Mtwalume took to the streets to protest against the lack of service delivery on May 11.

They blocked the main road in Mtwalume and the N2 freeway with burning tyres, trees, broken glass and rocks.

The protest centred around the lack of water and the poor state of an access road.

It is believed the community has not had water for at least two years.

“We have been forced to share river water with animals. We do not get any service delivery in this area, hence, we decided on the protest today, ” said community member Zamo Shozi.

Furthermore, she added that complaints have been lodged with the relevant department to address the water issue, but so far, no one has been willing to help.

According to a statement from Ugu District Municipality, work is under way in the area to fix water-related issues. The community also complained about the terrible condition of an access road, the D2191, which cannot be used by motorists or pedestrians.

Another community member, Maureen Mlambo said Umzumbe Municipality organised a meeting with the Department of Transport and Human Settlements, and since June 2025 meetings have been held, but the road is still not fixed.

“We are tired of being called to meetings all the time, however, when it’s time for the relevant departments to act, we see no action. We can barely walk or drive on that road.”

The Department of Transport’s spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya, was contacted for comment, but none was received at the time of going to press.
