Amakhosi speak up about illegal foreigners in Ugu District
According to Amakhosi, they need to make sure that their own people are protected.
Amakhosi under Ugu District have voiced out that they support the removal of illegal foreign nationals in their jurisdictions and in the province.
The chairperson of Amakhosi, Inkosi Mbuso Ngcobo, called a media briefing in Port Shepstone on May 15 to address the issue of illegal foreigners and the infrastructure handed to them by the Department of Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta).
“As Amakhosi we need to make sure that our own people are protected. We call on illegal foreigners to please leave our areas. We say this because we can see that people have had enough and if it continues there will be bloodshed and we do not want that,” said Inkosi Ngcobo.
He added that the problem is that most illegal foreigners are associated with crime and as most of them don’t have documents, it’s not easy to follow up when they do commit crimes.
“We are pleading with those who are in our areas to leave until they have the proper documentation to remain here.”
He said that at some point government departments such as Saps and Home Affairs will be called on for assistance.
Furthermore, Inkosi Ngcobo added it has been a long time since Amakhosi have been able to speak up, and that the Cogta MEC, Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has brought back their dignity.
“Previously we had no privileges as Amakhosi. We did not even have medical aid, but Buthelezi made sure that we got better care. Last week, the MEC gave us equipment to better ourselves, but we are hearing negative comments.”
Inkosi Ngcobo also mentioned that Amakhosi were given vehicles and it was insinuated that the vehicles were given only to particular Amakhosi who belong to certain political parties.
Inkosi Ngcobo emphasised that no Amakhosi belong to political parties.
