Cycling to top position

The local triathlete will compete in the Xterra World Championship in Hawaii later this year.

SOUTHBROOM  triathlete Darryn Purtell (22) achieved his second national U24 title at the Xterra Grabouw South African Championship in the Western Cape last Sunday.

He completed the race, which consisted of a 1.5km swim, 28km mountain bike stage and 11km trail run, in two hours 53 minutes and 20 seconds to win the 20-24 year division and earn the opportunity to compete in the Xterra World Championship in Hawaii in October. Darryn said that he was extremely proud to have won the title.

“Over 2000 Xterra Warriors competed for the coveted title of South African champion and although I feel my performance at the weekend was pleasing, I still see myself as a work in progress when it comes to the Xterra World Championships,” said Darryn.
