Netball South Africa makes major announcement

Netball world cup-winning Australian coach Norma Plummer will join the Spar Proteas as consulting coach.

AT a press briefing at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre on Monday this week, Netball South Africa announced that netball world cup-winning Australian coach, Norma Plummer was joining the Spar Proteas as consulting coach ahead of the Diamond Challenge, which began at the centre on Tuesday this week.

Netball South Africa president Mimi Mthethwa said Plummer would be an asset to the Spar Proteas and would be able to lead them in the right direction.

She explained that the Diamond Challenge is a symbol of the unification of African netball. “We welcome our sisters to our country, and we all say no to xenophobia.”

Plummer worked with the Proteas in February this year, and will work again with the current coaching panel led by Bennie Saayman. She said that she was excited to work with the Proteas again. “I retired from coaching full time after the World Cup in 2011, but since then I’ve realised that I can serve as a mentor coach.”

She praised the concept of the Diamond Challenge, in which South Africa will play against Malawi, Uganda and Zambia, the other African countries who will be taking part in the Netball World Cup in Sydney in August. “They need more competitions like the Diamond Challenge, which will help them all prepare for the World Cup,” said Norma.
