Eddie and Jessica just too good
THERE was outstanding weather, never mind the bowls, for the Kingfisher Bowling Association’s Masters finals played at Margate Bowling Club last weekend.
The tournament was sponsored by County Ford and the competition tough.
Port Shepstone’s Eddie Fann proved himself a true ‘Master’ once again by not losing a game to win gold with Keith Harcombe from The Bell the worthy silver medallist.
Mark Smith from Port Shepstone won the bronze and Louw Vermeulen from The Bell was placed fourth.
The women’s tournament saw a new ‘Master’ in Margate Bowling Club’s Jessica Henderson.
Her outstanding performance won her the gold medal from Dora Vosloo of Margate Country Club.
Margate BC’s Pam Cole-Cook won the bronze with The Bell’s Daphne Sapsford coming fourth.
The KBA executive thanked sponsor County Ford Port Shepstone for the continued support and also thanked Margate BC for the hospitality and the use of the greens and facilities.
Congratulations to Tyrone Ferguson on his appointment to the KBA executive at the AGM held last Monday.
BANNERS REST
SELECTION for the KBA club sevens to be played from November 2 to 6 have been done, and team names are on the notice board.
Entries for the KBA Saturday league will close on October 9 to enable selection ahead of October 12.
A reminder that nominations for next season’s committee can be made on the form found on the notice board, with the AGM taking place on Monday, October 19, followed by prize-giving.
The green is coming along nicely and will hopefully be reopened before the end of October.
MARGATE BC
WELL done to Jessica Henderson and Pam Cole-Cook who won gold and bronze respectively in the KBA Masters played last weekend.
Ellen Cawker is also congratulated on her ‘Women Overall Player of the Year’ award.
Winners of the Margate Panelbeaters’ Men’s 2-4-2 played last Friday were Gary Hess and Derek Schorn, with runners-up James Mitchell and Dave Taylorson.
Sessions went to Graham Dunlop and Brian Smallberger, and Hans Hugo and Henry Jacobs.
The annual Oktoberfest will take place on Saturday, October 31.
The quiz evening will be held on Wednesday, October 14 at 6pm. Come and enjoy a great evening, including a fish and chips supper for the total sum of R50.
Anyone interested in making themselves available for the Saturday leagues should enter their names on the relevant lists on the notice boards.

MARGATE CC
DORA Vosloo was asked to play in the Kingfisher Masters Singles competition last weekend and played brilliantly to win her section, beating many hot favourites.
This meant that she came up against Jessica Henderson in the finals. The match was hard fought, however Dora could not manage to pull this final one off.
The club is nevertheless very proud that she came away with the silver medal.
The Hair Shoppe Women’s Fours League started this month and the winners were Mal Moni, Ria van Vuuren, Trixie Smith and Val Erasmus.
Runners-up were Sheena Absalom, Vicki de Beer, Sharon Scheinberg and Sandy Ferguson.
NOMADS
THE next Nomads outing will be at Riverside BC this Sunday, October 11 at 8.30am for 9am.
There will be a bring and braai after the competition. All bowlers are welcome to join in with the Nomads.
PORT EDWARD
CONGRATULATIONS to all those who got prizes at the club’s recent awards evening.

Novice singles men’s winner was Rob Lyle, with Jens Andersen the runner-up.
Most improved bowler for the year was Jeanie West.

PORT SHEPSTONE
THE club was proud to have three representatives at the prestigious KBA Masters tournament last weekend.
Once again, Eddie Fann took honours, winning the tournament with a fine display of excellent bowls.
This continues a most remarkable run as he has now won the title no less than six times and been runner-up three times in the last 10 years.
It’s a feat that will be very difficult to match.
Eddie celebrated his 70th birthday earlier in the week, and subject to confirmation, it is almost a certainty that he is the first 70 year old to win the competition.
Mark Smith, playing exceptional bowls, achieved third place overall. Roy Anderson won three of his five games, reaching a credible fourth place in his section.
RIVERSIDE
HANDICAP Singles is this Saturday, October 10, with the draw being done at 8.15am.
A fun day will take place this Sunday, October 11, with the draw at 8.30am. There will also be a bring and braai.
The Hopdens Spar Open Trips will be held on Thursday, October 15, tabs in.

SOUTHPORT
THE Harbour View SuperSpar Women’s Trips held last Tuesday was won by Sheenagh Dempster, Astrid Jackson and Jean Cilliers.
Runners-up were Marie Coetzer, Barbara Gradwell and Mada Lindeque. The session prize went to Sharolyn Dacey, Michelle Vermeulen and Julia Cornwall.
The Interclub Men’s Fours was played last Thursday when the threatening rain held off long enough for the match to be concluded.
Three rinks from each of Margate, Hibberdene and Riverside competed against the home club, which provided an unusual result.
When scores were tallied up, all four clubs had scored nine points.
A count back on shots scored revealed Margate as having won the shield for this year.
Players expressed their appreciation of the lunch served and a day well organised and enjoyed.
This Thursday (today) sees the Interclub Women’s Trips between Umtentweni, The Bell, Hibberdene and Southport, where three rinks from each club will do battle.
The In House Twilight League Two Bowl Trips will enter its second round this Friday, Ocober 9 at 3pm.
The club will hold a formal committee meeting on Monday, October 12 at 2pm. It is open to all members, who are encouraged to attend.
THE BELL
THE Bell won the club of the year trophy, well done to all members who made this possible.
Congratulations also to Louw Vermeulen who won male achiever of the year and Keith Harcombe who won male bowler of the year.
Well done to all members who played so well in the Masters last weekend.
Daphne Sapsford came fourth in the women’s section, Keith Harcombe won the men’s silver medal and Louw Vermeulen was fourth.
The next sponsored competition is the Captain’s Anchor Mixed Fours to be played this Friday. Conveners are Sandy and Stan Penny.
The open trips will be played on Tuesday, October 13, convener is Steve O’Moore. Please inform them of any changes in your team.
UMTENTWENI
THE Harbour View SuperSpar Mixed Pairs played last Friday were won by Dennis Graham and Astrid Jackson.
Runners-up were George and Marie Pick and second session winners were Dumisani Madlala and Nellie Davies.
The next competition will be the Schooners Restaurant Mixed Trips on the morning of October 12.
The club will be hosting an open day this Sunday, October 11, aimed mainly at any non-bowlers who would like to get a feel for the game.
The day will commence at 9am, with 30 minutes of coaching, followed by a game and then a waffle lunch (savoury and sweet).
Bowls will be available, dress is casual, and the only requirement is that shoes/takkies have flat soles.

VILLAGE
THE club’s AGM and prize-giving was held last week in the Ronnie Baker Hall. The same committee was re-elected under the president Dave Garland.
Members retired to the ‘Boma Branch’ of the Creaking Joint for refreshments after the meeting.
It was good to catch up with bowling friends again – so remember Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4pm to 6pm.
