SAPS anglers hook third place
South Coast's men in blue took part in the annual fishing competition held at Port Edward recently.
POLICE officers under the banner of Umzimkhulu SAPS Angling Club, which is affiliated to the KwaZulu-Natal SAPS Provincial Rock and Surf Angling Club, competed against clusters from across the province in the annual fishing competition held at Port Edward last week.
Windy conditions did not stop the enthusiastic anglers from rising early in the morning and heading for the beach. The championships were held from November 1 to 6. All nine teams braved the strong, lashing winds which caused rough seas and unpleasant conditions.
Despite the unfavourable weather conditions, teams succeeded in hooking a number of fish, mainly bronze bream.
Several blacktail and stone bream were also caught. The winning team was Durban Central, with Durban Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) in second position and the local Umzimkhulu SAPS Angling Club in third place.
The commander of Ugu SAPS cluster, Major-General Thembi Ndlovu, attended the prize-giving in Port Edward last Thursday and handed over various prizes.
The organiser of the championship this year, Sergeant Rudi Smit from Port Shepstone, thanked Maj-Gen Ndlovu for her support and thanked everyone who assisted and contributed to making the event possible. The teams from Pongola and Vryheid will host next year’s championships, which will be held on the North Coast.
