SA colours for ‘Super Sam’
The Shelly Beach teenager has a bright future in the sport.
SAMANTHA Labuschagne (16) has been selected to swim for South Africa at the CANA Zone 3 Swimming Invitational in Kampala, Uganda from December 11 to 13.
That’s the good news. But there’s more.
Her Blue Ocean Aquatics Club coach, Mandy Koegelenberg, has been named as coach of the team and so will also be going.
Recently, Samantha was nominated for the KwaZulu-Natal Sports Awards by Mandy, as a result of her excellent achievements, mainly in backstroke, over the course of the past two years.
The nomination was duly evaluated by a panel of judges appointed by KZN’s Department of Sports and Recreation.
Nominations were received for ‘Junior Sports Woman of the Year’ across all sporting disciplines.
Samantha, who attends Creston College, was named as a finalist, but did not quite manage to clinch the title this time around.
However, it was still a remarkable achievement even being a finalist.
The awards ceremony was held at the International Convention Centre in Durban, and attended by about 1 000 guests, athletes and administrators.
