DARRYN Purtell (24) raced to a second place finish at the KwaZulu-Natal Triathlon Champs at Midmar Dam last Sunday.
He was fairly happy with his result, having moved up a category, but said the turnout in terms of the top competitors wasn’t that good.
The event, comprising a 1.5km swim, 40km ride and 10km run, was won by Brad Venter of Durban.
“I didn’t really know what to expect coming in to the race as I have been doing my training on the coast,” said Darryn.
Darryn felt the race had gone smoothly enough. “My bike leg was a bit slower than I would have liked but I had a very solid run, so overall I was quite happy,” he said.
He is now looking forward to competing in the X-Terra Offroad Triathlon in Buffelspoort, North West Province, this Sunday.
“We go past Marikana on the way there, I know that,” he said.
Darryn has just about completed his B Com degree in financial management – he is waiting for one more result to come through – and is considering studying honours, unless he finds a job.
“I’m still undecided at this point. I would still like to race and train where I can,” he said.
Darryn is from Southbroom but is currently living in Durban. He thanked those who had supported him in his racing to this point.
