Curlewis Shield for golfer Jeanne Powell
Local golfers produced some superb scores this week.
JEANNE Powell won the Curlewis Shield at Southbroom Golf Club last Wednesday, carding a nett 76 to win by two from Candida Amm.
In a tie for third in the bronze division on nett 79 were Sandy Fitzgerald and Julie Walker.
Geraldine Treherne won the silver division on nett 74, but had not qualified for the Shield during the year.
Heather Anderson was second on nett 81.
In the men’s comp Chris Poole returned nett 70 to count out Derek James. Malcolm Greenland was third on nett 72.
The Stableford section was won by Roy Deakins on 42 points, with Lance Marshall and John Lison tied for second on 38 points. Colin McKay was fourth on 36 points.
Geraldine was on the podium again last Saturday, winning the alliance with Lorraine Cook, Rene Matthew and Janet Humphrey on 89 points.
Runners-up were Jean Purtell, Mari Fielden, Joy Crutchfield and Hannah Hierhold on 86 points, followed by Jeanne Powell, Jenny Westray, Jackie van Eeden and Lyn Doveton on 84 points.
In the men’s comp, Chris Poole was again in the mix, winning the alliance on 96 points with Colin Mckay, Gary Purtell and Malcolm Greenland.
In second place were Nico Faber, Terry Sheppard, Roger Phillips and a ‘ghost’ on 91 points, while third went to Paul Cole, Gerald Fitzgerald, Gurney Mathews and Joe Carolan on 89 points.
Margarets in cruise control
THE two Margarets, namely Taylor and Ford, teamed up to win at Margate Country Club on 65 points last Tuesday.
In the process, they counted out Connie McArthur and Elise Pretorius. Third place went to Wondra Bothma and Hannetjie on 60 points.
The Wobblers’ comp last Wednesday saw Derek Egerton, Dave Morrison and Brian Jeffreys take the laurels on 86 points, two clear of Rolf Speilmann, Rob McGill and Wimpie Jordaan.
Three further adrift were Alan Robinson, Alan Davies and Jim Finn. The Arthur Tomlinson Floater went to James Tutt, Hans Beilhartz and Jan Richter on 69 points.
Chris Nel won Thursday’s comp on 41 points, pipping Louie Carreira and Charlie Hartman by one.
Eddie Davies chalked up 43 points to win Saturday’s Stableford by two from Pierre Malherbe. Angus McLachlan was a distant third on 38 points.
In the women’s section, first prize went to Elise Pretorius on 37 points, three clear of Hannetjie Pretorius.
In a tie for third on 32 points were Hilary Hendry and Jane Davies.
Doveton in full flight
JIMMY Doveton had a pretty good week at Port Edward Country Club.
He won the Wednesday competition on 40 points and then cleaned up on Saturday as well, teaming up with John Fourie to win on 50 points.
Runners-up were Pat McCormick and Steve Reed on 48 points, followed one point behind by Bob Wagner and Frank Carr.
The Coffin Dodgers’ game on Tuesday saw ‘mystery partners’ team up.
Winners were Frank Carr and Pat McCormick on 75 points, followed by Johan Greeff and Frans Fremouw on 70 points.
Fabricius shoots 67 but counted out
CHARLES Hulley and Ken Morris won last Wednesday’s betterball at Port Shepstone Country Club on 48 points, counting out Graham Fabricius, who shot 67, and Paul Geoffery.
Saturday’s alliance was won by Ronnie Mtshaka, Emmanuel Mseleku, Emmanuel Godongwana and AB Sidumo on 133 points.
In second place were Peppy Govender, Ganes Munsami, Dr Ayoob Bux and his son Altaaf on 129 points.
Third spot went to Thys Blom, Johann du Plessis, Hans Stols and Hans Stols junior on 125 points.
Fourth position was claimed by Tony Fairbairn, Steve McCarroll, Mark Smith and Shaun Nathanson on 120 points.
