Golfers ‘drive’ ahead
The Audi A4's launch in South Africa has coincided with the sport of golf.
GOLF and/or motoring fans may have noticed that an Audi A4 was on offer for a hole-in-one on the 14th during the recent Tshwane Open at Pretoria Country Club. But only on the weekend.
The tournament was won by 2011 US Masters champion Charl Scwartzel but Andrew Curlewis (Margate Country Club) and former Port Shepstone Country Club member Jaco van Zyl were in the field as well.
Curlewis came fairly close to acing it, hitting a 9-iron on the 148m hole to within six feet. “We got a bit excited there for a bit,” he said.
Justin Harding, who had the lead for a while early on, aced the hole on the Friday. “Unfortunately it didn’t count, that’s how it goes,” said Curlewis.
Audi South Africa was pleased to partner with the City of Tshwane at the event, as the official vehicle partner, and used the tournament as a platform to launch the new Audi A4 to South Africa.
The hole-in-one opportunity was met with some awe from the golfing community as the 14th hole at Pretoria Country Club is in fact the shortest hole on the course.
However, true to Audi’s Vorsprung spirit, the brand has insisted on keeping this hole as testament to its pioneering character.
In the lead-up to the event, Audi South Africa spent a day with four of the Tour’s young players in a video production featuring South African comedian, Tats Nkonzo.
Haydn Porteous, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Brandon Stone and Zander Lombard were given a front row seat in the thrilling experience of being driven around the brand new Kyalami Racing Circuit with South African-born international Audi Sport racing driver, Kelvin van der Linde.

“Audi South Africa is extremely excited to partner with the Sunshine Tour and the 2016 Tshwane Open for the first time. Golf has always been an asset that Audi has been heavily involved in both locally and internationally, and with the recent resurgence of interest in the sport by a younger emergent audience, it makes for a perfect fit with the progressive spirit of Audi,” said Esther Francis, marketing communications manager of Audi South Africa.
“It also coincides perfectly with the launch of the all new Audi A4 which is based on the value of ‘progress’, therefore our aim behind the various activations is to deliver a unique and innovative experience for the Tour, spectators and players alike,” she said.
