Warriors make Usher Cup history
The rugby team has started the season in the best way possible.
THE South Coast Warriors have won the Usher Cup three times in a row for the first time since its inception in 1922.
Played in Matatiele last Saturday, the first game was against Ixopo, who were duly beaten 44-0.
In the second game, which served as a semi-final, the Warriors had a tough time of it against Kapaailand, eventually muscling to a 19-7 win.
It was the only game where points were scored against the Warriors – and it was an intercept try!
Matatiele provided for an extremely motivated opponent in the final, especially as they had defeated arch-rivals Kokstad in the other semi-final.
However, the Warriors were just too strong, perhaps in response to the amount of support the home side had from the local spectators.
“The Warriors were on fire. Their structures were excellent, and with the top players all fit and our game-plan working, we were just too quick,” said coach Christo Henderson.
The final score was 44-0.
Karel van Rooyen was the player of the tournament.
There were a number of newcomers in the squad, with some of the youngsters making their mark.
No doubt they’ll be knocking on the door for Moor Cup squad selection.
The first game is against Amanzimtoti at Growth Point Kings Park on April 2.
