Hospice hosts big walk

This is a new South Coast Hospice fund-raising event.

SOUTH Coasters spent their Human Rights Day stepping out for South Coast Hospice by taking part in a new event, a big fun walk or run from the Uvongo fishing pier. Participants had a choice of doing the 5km route by walking, running, strolling or pushing a pram along Lillicrona Boulevard to Margate north beach and back or doubling up and doing the route twice to complete a 10km route. Wheelchair entrants were positively encouraged to join in the fun.

South Coast Striders came out in their numbers at the event to pay tribute to former club runner, Stephanie Markram, a member for 24 years,

who died aged 71 on March 1 after battling cancer. She was the head of the Afrikaans Department at Port Shepstone High School for over 30 years.

Boerie rolls, hot dogs, tea and coffee were available at the finish. Everyone who completed the walk, run or cycle received a hand-made gift. BT King of South Coast Hospice said that she was delighted to host an event where the benefits were twofold; charity and the promotion of healthy, active lifestyles. “The event gave family and friends an opportunity to get active and enjoy a scenic walk with the beautiful views of our coast, while at the same time raising much-needed funds for a worthy cause,” she said. South Coast Hospice will use the proceeds to continue providing palliative care for patients in need of it within the South Coast community.
