FOUR young golfers have put Suid-Natal High on the schools’ golfing map with an unexpected victory at the Kenako Champs held in George recently.
Schonken brothers Wensel and Adriaan teamed up with Jaco Janse van Rensburg and Janrick Labuschagne to win the B division comprehensively.
They haven’t been playing golf for all that long and currently have handicaps of 20, 27, 13 and 30 respectively.
Wensel, Jaco and Janrick are all in grade 12, while Adriaan is the ‘laaitjie’ (albeit a fairly big one!) in grade 8.
The tournament was held at three different courses, namely George, Mossel Bay and Kingswood.
After the first day, they suddenly realised they could actually win the event.
“It was a big tournament and we kept first place the whole way through,” said a mightily pleased Wensel.
They all played some great golf. Over the three days, Jaco made nine birdies, Wensel chalked up five, and Adriaan two.
Janrick only had one birdie (and lots of pars) but his was quite spectacular – a putt from the rough on a par three which dropped into the cup and brought him five points!
The scoring system was such that three scores of the four had to count on each day.
In the end they won by 32 points. “We worked it out that if we had taken our worst scores on each day, we still would have won,” said Wensel.
Wensel placed first overall in the B division, with the other three all in the top 10.
At George, he had what he described as the ’round of his life’, where he carded 43 points.
It was the first time Suid-Natal had ever won, with a previous best effort of third place.
There were some highlights, including seeing some Springbok (the buck, not the rugby players!) on the course at Mossel Bay.
The golfers, who are all members at Port Shepstone Country Club, were supported by Liberty Life and Roto Tank.
