Igniting fresh interest in tennis
The tournament aimed to expose the people of the greater South Coast region to tennis.
ALL roads led to three tennis courts this weekend, Umtentweni, Uvongo and Douglas Mitchell, where the South Coast Open Tennis Tournament 2016, a part of a developmental tennis journey which aims to expose the junior and adult tennis talent of the province to the people of the greater South Coast region, took place. Included in the tournament was a tennis development clinic for local youth, which aimed to identify new talent and to ignite fresh interest in the sport.
Tennis is one of the most popular recreational sports in the nation and a great workout to boot, not forgetting the added benefits of potential career opportunities. With this in mind, Ugu South Coast Tourism committed funds and resources as the naming sponsor of the inaugural South Coast Open Tennis Tournament 2016. Other sponsors included Dunlop Fort ball and National Lotteries Board which is the overall sponsor of KZN Tennis Association and its development programme. Approximately 100 players took part, 60 men and 40 women, with up to 30 children in the development clinic, all under the age of 10.
