FISHERMEN were ready to reel in the ‘big one’ at the Hibberdene Easter Fishing Compo last Sunday and so earn bragging rights for the biggest game fish.
Unfortunately, this did not happen and the competition was cancelled as unsuitable river conditions made it impossible for fishermen to launch their boats.
But, in true South Coast spirit, that didn’t dampen the mood of the day.
The children’s competition still went ahead as planned and they had fun trying to catch the ‘biggest’ fish along the river, with a helping hand from their parents.
There were no losers as each of them received a small prize.
There was a jovial atmosphere at the prize-giving evening and fishermen were ‘fined’, to raise funds for local lifeguards.

The competition was turned into a lucky draw with 10 top prizes.
Lucky winner, Andre Laubscher won the top prize valued at R17 200.
Mark Shum was second and Dirk Swart third.
The committee thanked all the sponsors, including the main sponsors Stick a Tile, Blue Waters Pub and Build it for the generous prize money and contributions towards making the day a success.
