MOST golfers try to avoid water hazards … but some local ones recently put their aversion to water aside and came out to play in an NSRI fund-raiser at the Wild Coast Sun Country Club recently.
The focus was on fun and raising finances to help the local base to keep operating.
Winners on the day were Roelof Craig and Martyn Nagtegaal, but the list of those who received prizes, as read out by Wild Coast pro Fred Beaver, was a long one!
Prize-giving was held at the Dolphin Pub & Grill in Glenmore Beach.
It has a great atmosphere, especially when packed with golfers, and a splendid view of the nearby beach.
John Nicholas, station commander at the Port Edward base, explained that NSRI was an organisation of volunteers.
But it’s not only about rescuing those in distress at sea.
“NSRI volunteers do a lot more than that,” explained John. “For example, we go out when people have had heart attacks, been in motor vehicle accidents, when women go into labour and can’t get to the hospital in time, stabbings and more.”
“As you can see, it’s lots of fun,” he said, to laughter and applause.
However, the good work NSRI does cannot be sustained without financial support and John went to great lengths to thank those who had made contributions.
He said one of the boat motors was replaced this year, and cost in the region of R350 000.
“Without the proper equipment, we cannot do what we love – and that’s serve the community. These things cost money and you have made it possible, thank you,” he said.
The sponsors were all thanked, including Karcher for the handover of a high pressure washer worth R3700.
