FOR the first time ever, the Alfie Cox Invitational was held at an extreme off-road trail in Umzumbe on Saturday last week. Only 30 of the best riders in the country were handpicked and invited to compete in this pilot project held at the Henderson Farm. “It is considered the toughest and one of the most extreme courses in the world,” said Alfie Cox who is well known in the biking fraternity and one of five Red Bull athletic legends. “A lot of international riders come here to train,” he added. This world class enduro trail is over 11 kms with nine major obstacles over rough terrain, some treacherously steep and slippery. It winds through Henderson farm and surrounding farmlands. This unique course was definitely designed for men with steel in their veins.
Among the competitors were three South Coast riders Wade Young, Scott Bouverie and Kyle Flanagan. One watched in awe as the riders used great skill and guts to negotiate dangerous conditions. The crowds lapped it up, cheering the riders on as they skilfully manoeuvred their machines to do the seemingly impossible, ramping and launching their bikes high into the air. There were some spills, fortunately nothing serious, but heart-stopping nonetheless. At a nail-biting finish, Scott Bouverie came first with a time of 49m, 54s, William Slater was second and Dwayne Kleynhans took third place. The event was well organised with exciting commentary, great food, pumping music and cheering crowds, all the hallmarks of a successful day. Congratulations to these brave and phenomenal riders who survived the ultimate test of endurance at this enduro playground and we look forward to the next event.
