From the bowling greens: The Bell ‘tolls’ for Margate BC in tight final

KINGFISHER BOWLING ASSOCIATION
THE Kingfisher Bowling Association Mixed Fours tournament saw a fantastic weekend of really good bowls from everyone.
Quite a number of spectators went and supported their teams. It makes such a difference to the players.
The finals, held at Southbroom on Monday this week, ended in a nail-biting finish that went to an extra end to determine the winner between The Bell’s Louw Vermeulen, Keith Harcombe, Charmaine van Deventer and Michelle Vermeulen and Margate Bowling Club’s Ellen Cawker, Alan Gibson, Tom Cawker and Ann Gibson.
The Bell showed their mettle and finally won the game by one shot.
Third place went Ollie and Marie Coetzer with Albert and Alida Munnik from Hibberdene, and fourth place to Bob Elliot, Liesje de Rosner and Tony and Anne Simpson from AMBC.
The Executive thanked everyone involved at the venues but in particular to Southbroom for its hospitality and hard work on Monday for the finals.
Special thanks to the catering women and greens staff for doing such a sterling job.
Thanks also to the technical officials and competition secretaries who give up their time so willingly.
BANNERS REST
THE Port Edward SuperSpar two-bowl trips were won by Rob Lyle, Phillipa Rowney and Derek Wicks, from runners-up Pam and Brian Cole-Cook with Vi Pells.
Second session went to Dan Delaney, Frank Foley and Leoné Bloem, and the 50/50 board to Martiens Zietsman.
The Tops Port Edward men’s pairs was won by Steve Rennie and Andreas van der Linde.
Placed second were Ray Martin and Rob Lyle, and third Peter Ziervögel and Vi Pells. The 50/50 board went to Ray Martin.
With the Indulgence Beauty Salon open pairs now moved from June 10 to June 29, the next sponsored competition is the annual Super Spar Port Edward Tri-Club mixed trips from June 22 to 24.
HIBBERDENE
A VERY successful Hibiscus Week was held last week. Thanks to all the bowling clubs between Hibberdene and Port Shepstone who catered for the teams and presented lovely greens.
Also, a big thank you to all the sponsors who provided prize-money and sponsored the individual rinks, as also to the greenkeepers for their hard work.
The shield was won by Ollie Coetzer and team from Hibberdene. Second were Gavin Stokes and team from Creighton and combination.
Keith Harcombe and team from The Bell came third. Fourth place was last year’s winner, Barry Delvin and team.
Fifth place went to Stoffel van Graal and team from Bethlehem. The plate was won by Albert Munnik and team from Hibberdene.
The next competition is that Hibberdene Pharmacy nominated trips this Friday (17th).
MARGATE BC
TOUGH luck to the Cawkers (Tom and Ellen) and Gibsons (Alan and Ann) who narrowly lost the final of the KBA Mixed Fours at Southbroom this week.
Well done to Shane Nienaber and his team on reaching the quarter-finals.
The next sponsored competition is the Manaba Kwikspar women’s 2-4-2 this Friday (17th).
The Quiz will be held on Wednesday, June 22 at 6.30pm. Come and join in on an evening of fun and camaraderie and a delicious meal.

MUNSTER
LEIGH Warner and Dave Hume won the recent Krafty Chameleon men’s pairs, from Hedley Meek and Dan Delaney.
Session went to Aubrey Hood and Steve Rennie; board to Hedley Meek.
The Spur sponsored tabs last Saturday were postponed so a normal tabs in was held, plus 30 Club draw and braai, despite the cold wind.
Winners were: 1 Willie Smith, 2 Llewellyn Angus, 3 Leoné Bloem, 4 Jean Longdon.

NOMADS
DUE to the KBA men’s and women’s pairs competitions taking place, there will no Nomads game for the month of June.
Details about the next outing will be announced soon.
PORT EDWARD
IT is with deep sympathy that club members extend condolences to Glenn Allen and family on the death of valued member, Nova.
Winners of the Indulgence Beauty Salon mixed trips were Jokkie and Marianne van Buuren with Estelle Carter.
Runners-up were Helen Cock, Leoné Bloem and Rick Harding with second session winners Gawie Bosman, Gino Allilovic and Pat Brand.
Tops Crossing winners were Rod Phelps, Peter Bennett and Mary Phelps, from Elbe Snyman, Rob Lyle and Francien van der Merwe.
Session prize went to Dan and Hazel Delaney with Arthur Ronaldson .
RIVERSIDE
MADGE Nicolson, Jenny Bruce and Ann Gibson won the Hopdens Spar open trips, followed by Ray Visser, Colin Eltis and Henry Bakaza.
Sessions to Chummy Smith, Marilyn Francis, John Gibson, Joan Muir and Philip Audibert.
Lucky draw winner was Malcolm Taylor.
The Ear Institute two-bowl power play open pairs is on Wednesday, June 22 at 12.30pm.
SOUTHBROOM
IT was a busy weekend at the club with the KBA mixed fours taking place. Remember there will not be any bowls this weekend as the KBA men’s and women’s pairs will take place here.
There will be tabs in on Monday, June 20.
Congratulations to Val Kirkbright, Juanita Fourie and Monika Zunker on winning the Ya Ya’s women’s trips. Runners-up were Ina Malan, Viv Date and Elaine Harrison.
First session went to Yvonne James, Sharon Scheinberg and Alison Dinning. Second session to Trixie Smith, Sandy Ferguson and Heidi Bracegirdle. 50/50 to Laraine Coetzer.
SOUTHPORT
HIBISCUS Week, which involved bowlers from other parts of the country, as well as locals, come and gone.
Much hard work was completed on a voluntary basis, with the club being grateful for the members’ contributions. Visitors were able to renew old friendships and make many new contacts.
The facilities and the hospitality were favourably commented on by all, and players remarked how much they had enjoyed the experience, making all the hard work worthwhile.
The club will be represented next weekend in the KBA men’s and women’s pairs.
Club routine gets back to normal with the Dr D’Arcy sponsored men’s trips taking on June 23.
THE BELL
WELL done to Hibberdene Bowling Club on a successful Hibiscus Week.
Congratulations to Louw Vermeulen, Keith Harcombe, Charmaine van Deventer and Michelle Vermeulen on winning the KBA mixed fours.
The next sponsored games at the club will be Fruit & Veg mixed 2-4-2 on June 21 and the Orca mixed trips on June 24.
There will be a braai after bowls this Sunday (19th). Usual Saturday and Wednesday afternoon bowls. All welcome.

VILLAGE
WINNERS of the Hibiscus Retirement Villages men’s trips were Ron Canning, Reg Sanders and Rennie Geyer, followed by Denzil Massyn, Gary Hess and Carl Volker, on a countout from Roy Robertson, Fred Askham and Lucas Barnard.
Sessions went to Barry Christie, Norman Isherwood and Derrick Shell, and to John Sutton, Hein Bester and Bill Latham. Mike Ryan won the 50/50.
Winners of the Hibiscus Brokers mixed trips were Keith and Maureen Roach, with Dereck Schorn, followed by Alan Tyers, Denzil Massyn and Marie Momple.
Sessions went to Ina Malan, Bill Parfitt and Manny Piquito, and to Martiens and Jo Olivier with Cindy Cano. Roy Robertson won the 50/50.
The next sponsored competition is Hopden’s Kwikspar mixed 2-4-2 on June 28. Draw is up for the mixed pairs. Put your names on the list for the singles championships.
Hyundai tabs in drawn mixed trips will be held this Saturday, June 18. Tabs in by 1.15pm. Bring and braai this Friday (17th).

THE Lower South Coast 2-4-2 Mixed Pairs tournament will be played at four clubs from September 5 to 9 this year.
Host clubs are Southbroom, Banners Rest, Port Edward and Munster.
