Herald Fishing: Shad in abundance
Fishermen are hoping the latest shad run is a good sign of what's to come.
SHAD fishing has been ‘wild’ this past week or so. That’s probably about the best way to describe the recent activity.
One local fisherman, in his excitement, typed on WhatsApp that they had been ‘all over Europe’. Pesky autocorrect!
He meant Uvongo… and he wasn’t wrong. Fishermen flocked to the beach – and other spots – but Uvongo seemed the best spot to be.
Other good spots included Shelly Beach, St Mike’s and Shad Bay (Manaba).
Most of the shad were of a good size, too, with very few undersize. In between all this, some kingfish and garrick have been hooked.
It’s good to see such a decent shad run and bodes well for a good fishing season.
Fishing has been limited for the deep sea fishermen, with the big comp last week and now the SA juniors taking place this week.
News from the Transkei is that fishing has been very quiet in those waters, with barely a nibble.
