Swimmers dive in at the lake
This popular event is held annually at the Lake Eland Game Reserve in Oribi Gorge.
SKILL levels were tested as hundreds of swimmers took part in the 10th South Coast Lake Eland Mile last Sunday, which featured distances from 500m to 3km. Hosted by Margate Swimming Club, it challenged all swimmers, from across the country, to join them in the water at the bottom dam at Lake Eland for the annual open water swimming event which, this year, was bigger and better than ever.
There were five events which catered for all age groups. Event one featured a three kilometre swim for all ages, event two was a mile for girls 13 years and under, women 31 years and older and those with disabilities, event three was also a mile for boys 13 years and under, men 31 years and older and those with disabilities, event four a mile for women and men 14 to 30 years while event five was a 500-metre fun/team event.

All swimmers received medals on completion of their events. There were also numerous prizes for schools, clubs, family and corporate teams and many lucky draw prizes as well.
Organisers secured excellent sponsorships and a wonderful array of prizes.
Light rains the night before, threatened to put a damper on the event, however in true South Coast style, locals banded together and made this Lake Eland Mile a true success!
This was certainly a fun family day in a really beautiful setting and all those that came along enjoyed the fun.
