Ivan honoured by KZN Golf Union
Not many have made such a big impact over such a long period of time.
IVAN Curlewis, back for a second term as president, was recently granted honorary life membership of the KwaZulu-Natal Golf Union.
In terms of the constitution, any former president, vice-president, secretary or any member of the executive, may be elected by the union in general meeting, and ratified at the ensuing annual general meeting as an honorary life member by reason of him conferring some special service to or benefit upon the union.
The executive committee was of the considered opinion that Ivan has indeed conferred some special service to or benefit upon the union over the past 30 years.
Ivan served as president of the KZNGU from 2010 to 2013. He also served on the executive committee of the South African Golf Association during these years.
Ivan has represented South Africa at international level on five different occasions as a member of the South African Country Districts team in Test matches against Kenya and Namibia from 1998 to 2002.
He has represented KwaZulu-Natal at both premier and country districts level over a period of 30 years from 1974 to 2006.
Ivan is probably the only golfer in South Africa who has been a president of a union and played, captained and managed two Interprovincial teams – the premier and country districts Interprovincial teams of his union.
From a club perspective, Ivan has been a member of Margate Country Club for 52 years, during which time he has served as captain, chairman and president.
He has won Margate CC’s strokeplay club championships a record 35 times.
