Benjamin has a special connection with golf
Benjamin works hard to promote excellence in green keeping and to mirror the high standards of groundsmanship.
THERE is a special connection between a golf course and its players… and the Wild Coast has hit the right note.
At the Wild Coast Sun Hotel and Casino Resort, that special connection is also evident between golf operations manager Benjamin Leonard and the greens.
Benjamin said that the best part of his job is seeing a smile on a happy, satisfied golfer’s face and on the faces of his staff.
“I run most of the operations at the golf club, which include overseeing the maintenance contracts for both the golf course and estates, managing of the golf cart fleet and maintenance, assuring smooth operation of the country club halfway house, managing budgets and revenues, generating golf rounds and reviving interest in the Wild Coast Sun Country Club and facilitating and insuring smooth operations of touring groups, amateur events and pro golf events. I always give my all in everything I do.”
A former Port Shepstone High matriculant, Benjamin said that he worked extremely hard to be where he is today. “It took a lot of time and effort and a lot of sacrifices along the way, but in the end it was worth it. I also think it is because I treat everybody with respect and dignity and equality. The key to my success so far is my work ethic, my hunger to learn and the support I receive not only from the company I work for, but from friends.”
Some of Benjamin’s achievements include working on the Wild Coast Environment Committee to achieve The Heritage Platinum status for the complex and The Eagle status for the golf course (the only golf and leisure resort in South Africa to be awarded these achievements), being part of the Wild Coast Sun’s Nashua Masters, the Sunshine Tour Event and part of the SA triple crown and working at the European Open at The K-Club, County Kildare, Ireland where he was responsible for cutting the tournament greens.
He worked as the green keeper (bent grass) at the Grove Country Resort, Hertfordshire, England from 2003 to 2005, thereafter from 2006 to 2007 he became the course manager (paspalum) at Port Shepstone Country Club. From June 2007 he worked for Leitch Landscapes as the green keeper for the Wild Coast Sun Country Club. In August 2016, he was appointed the golf operations manager, Wild Coast Sun Country Club.
General manager of the Wild Coast Sun Hotel and Casino Resort, Myan Moodley said that he was particularly pleased that Benjamin was working with the resort to promote excellence in green keeping and to mirror the high standards of groundsmanship.
“He demonstrates the skill and dedication of the teams and individuals who, week in, week out, in all weathers, make such a vital contribution to golf and we are proud of him!”
Benjamin explained that he is an individual with passion and commitment to the horticultural industry. He is a member of the Turf Managers’ Association (TMA) South Africa and his hobbies include joinery/cabinet making, surfing, reading and rugby. “Dedication and self discipline are integral characteristics in both my professional and home life. I enjoy hard work and I enjoy the rewards earned from my efforts.”
