Dragsters ‘gas it’ at Dezzi raceway

IT was old school versus new school at the KZN Drags at Dezzi Raceway in Oslo Beach last week Saturday. Organised by KZN Drag Racing and Gas Magazine, the event attracted over 3 000 visitors and close to a 100 competitors from KZN and Johannesburg. The first 60 feet of the Dezzi South Coast Raceway drag strip was prepared for competitors to attempt an eight-second and nine-second pass, or to break the infamous 10-second barrier.

Father and son team Terry and Marco Yannikakis of Shelly Beach said that the racing may be over but, honestly, they can’t wait to get back in the cars. “This drag has been a challenge and we are looking to move forward and faster. We qualified strong and, instead of thinking about what we could have done differently or better, we are going to focus on the positive gains,” said the duo.

According to said KZN Motorsport Representative, Darren Lewis, the event proceeded very well. “This is the first time that 60 feet was covered. The Dezzi Raceway boasts the only permanent drag racing facility in KZN. Drivers have been desperate for a safe, family-orientated venue at sea level and many of them looked forward to officially testing their vehicle capabilities while their families looked on,” said Mr Lewis.

Owner of Dezzi South Coast Raceway, Dez Gutzeit, said that the event was a real spectacle for the crowds. “After a disappointing two-week postponement of this event due to inclement weather, we finally got a chance to burn some serious rubber this weekend. We expected a big turnout at the raceway and that’s what we got,” said Mr Gutzeit. “The drivers handled themselves with professionalism and class, constantly working hard to break into the winner’s circle. We commend them for their dedication and never-quit attitude.”
