MAYAH Potgieter from Ramsgate has just started surfing and is ‘off the charts’ excited about it.
So much so that she might just follow in the surfing booties of her mentor, South Coast legend and world champion Heather Clark.
Rising star Mayah (10), affectionately known as Smurf, is one of the star-studded selection of surfers who have entered the Lizzard Hurricane Summer Surf contest held at Umhlanga Main Beach on December 10 and 11.
The event will open up the 2016 Umhlanga Summer Festival hosted by Just Juice, which takes place from December 10 to 23.
Mayah only started surfing last year, but has already grown a deep passion for the ocean and her parents, Carla and Charl, and her little brother, Hanno, are very supportive of her surfing.
Heather inspired her to try the sport and has been her coach for just over a year.
She is now hooked and the family can’t keep her out of the water.
“Mayah was my first full time student and she had never surfed before. I am so happy she came to me for lessons. She is honestly such a pleasure to work with,” said Heather.
Heather said Mayah is always happy and smiling and will go out no matter how good or bad the surf may be.
“It is never too early for her to join me in the surf and we often have dawn patrol at St Mike’s beach. I can’t wait to help her compete in the Lizzard Hurricane event.”
