Mayor aces her golf day
Is there a woman mayor anywhere else in the country as passionate about golf as Ray Nkonyeni's Cynthia Mqwebu? Just asking.
MAYOR Cynthia Mqwebu is surely somewhat of a unique first citizen in this country.
Where else would one find a woman mayor so passionate about golf that she has personally put her muscle behind promoting the sport among the youth, the previously disadvantage in particular?
Kitted out in golfing gear, she rushed back from an important meeting in Richard’s Bay to spend last Friday at Margate Country Club.
PGA teaching professional Colin Iddon – with international experience – has taken the youngsters under his wing.
There were only a handful of young golfers at last year’s event, but double the number this year… so her efforts are working.
There is little doubt that her young golfing students are going to benefit from what she is doing. They might not all match the skill of the likes of Ernie Els, but everyone knows that lots of business deals are made on the golf course.
When these youngsters go out into the working world, their golfing abilities could open up all sorts of opportunities in a fraternity that used to be largely pale, male and privileged.
Add on golfing etiquette, concentration skills, discipline and much more lessons in life through learning to play this sport.
Mayor Mqwebu fell in love with golf thanks to the SA Woman’s Open which will be played once again at San Lameer this year.
Her busy scheduled has put a damper on her own golfing ambitions, but she confessed that she was dying to learn how to play.
This year’s Mayor’s Golf Day also attracted great support from numerous sponsors, the Herald proud to be one of them.
The winners are in the photographs alongside this story, but the real champions of the day were Mayor Mqwebu and her young golfers.
