MOIRA King, a South Coast Strider, has previously taken part in races around the province as a walker.
But she recently decided to up the pace and enter the Sani Stagger in Himeville as a runner in the 21km ‘down’ run, from the top of the pass to the Sani Pass hotel.
It went better than expected and she ended up winning her category (women 60 to 69) and finished 35th overall among the women, all in a time of 2:30:37. She was 76th overall.
“The road is only accessible with 4×4 vehicles,” said her husband Basil, full of admiration for his wife’s achievement.
Two other Striders also took part, but in the 42km race which was up and down the pass, starting at the hotel.
Eddie Ramaloo clocked a time of 6:30:04 and finished 16th in the 50 to 59 category. He was 178th in the men’s race and 227th overall.
Robert Mkutyukelwa also had a crack at the race but unfortunately failed to finish.
