MMA fighters teach children how to prevent bullying

A whole lot of self-defence techniques were taught at the seminar.

LEGEND Reapers MMA was recently invited to give a seminar at Kay Venter’s birthday in Oslo Beach to raise awareness about the sport of mixed martial arts.

This involved explaining the dedication and discipline required to be a fighter, as well as the immense respect these fighters have for one another.

“Many people in today’s society, young and old, sadly lack these qualities,” said coach William Marais of Legends Reapers.

Children and adults were introduced to each some of the club’s fighters present on the day, namely Ronel ‘Flintrifle’ Potgieter, Lee ‘The Lycan’ Thomas and William, who has the nickname ‘Dragon Rider’.

They were shown the different gloves, shin-guards and headgears used by amateurs as well as the professional MMA fighters.

The kata was performed, followed by self-defence demonstrations of how to thwart a knife and/or firearm attack, from the back and front.

Then there was an explanation about the basic throws, chokes, guards, mounts and side-controls, plus a few judo throws.

There was also a demonstration on what to do if you get bullied at school. “The children loved the performance and wanted to see more,” said William.

A demonstration video of MMA fights was shown to them, which they loved.

It was a great day and Legend Reapers was welcomed by a lot of friendly faces.

“I want to thank everyone for taking part in this great day and in making Kay’s day a success,” added William.
