Herald Fishing: Anglers flock to Pumula for King of the Sea compo
The competition has grown in popularity.
JET-SKIS, kayaks and ski-boats took to the sea to fight it out for the inaugural title of Safire Insurance King of the Sea at Pumula.
Friday night’s briefing was abuzz with excited anglers plotting their moves for Saturday morning with others keeping their cards very close to their chests.

More than a hundred anglers launched between the boundaries of Isipingo in the north and Uvongo river mouth in the south in search of ‘the fish’ that would claim them the title.
Saturday’s conditions started off well and it looked like anglers were able to fish for most of the day.
Throughout the day steady catches were seen at the weigh-inn and, with only two fish per species per angler as permitted by the competition rules, were weighed.
This formula coupled with the restrictions that only snoek, couta, yellowfin tuna, wahoo and dorado could be taken out, guaranteed that this event had little to no effect on the marine life off this stretch of coastline.
Many families as well as visitors at Pumula Beach Hotel enjoyed free seafood braais, beer tasting, wine tasting, live music, big screen rugby and many lucky draws throughout Saturday.
The final weigh-inn on Saturday closed at 5pm.
In the end Matthew Defilippi walked away with the 2017 Safire Insurance King of the Sea title with his monster 28.5kg couta. He took prizes to the value of R20 000.
No stranger at winning huge fishing compos, Matthew also won the 2015 Mallards/Mercury Shelly Beach Ski-Boat Festival competition.
All in all, the event was a huge success with many saying it was the best fishing event on the KZN South Coast.
Rock and Surf
Wind, seaweed and swells resulted in only a few shad and kob coming out at The Block in Port Shepstone.
In Uvongo, a good few hound sharks were caught, while a few sharks and shad were landed off Port Edward.
Anglers managed to bag a couple of rock cod, bronze bream, flapnose houndsharks, cave bass and eel tail barbels over the weekend.
Coming up
The Umthunzi Fun Fishing Weekend is coming up in July.
It includes live music with Jason Hartman on Friday, July 7, followed by fishing on Saturday, July 8.
