Premier league golfers staring down relegation barrel

There's still a lot to play for.

NOTHING short of a small miracle will save Southern KwaZulu-Natal’s premier league golfers from having to go into a dreaded Premier League relegation play-off final later this year.

They take on Royal Durban at Southbroom Golf Club this Sunday and need to win 10-2 to avoid finishing bottom of the log.

The team to play is Gavin Sole (Southbroom GC), Sean Baker (Margate CC), Graham Fabricius (Port Shepstone CC), Robert Mavundla (Margate), Warren van Heerden (Umdoni Park), Van Zyl Greyling (Southbroom GC), Elvis Khawula (Margate CC) and Mikhail van Brakel (Umdoni Park).

Jason Gilliver (Selborne Park) flies out this week for a stint in the United States, so unfortunately won’t be available.

In the event of a tie on log points and match points, the result will be determined by a play-off match.

Robert Mavundla will be hoping to reverse his team’s fortunes.

In the event of a tie in any play-off match, each team will select one member to play a ‘sudden death’ match commencing on the first tee.

Meanwhile, things aren’t as gloomy for the Central league team who have already avoided relegation, but have not done enough to win their pool either.

Their team to play Royal Durban at Southbroom (an ironic coincidence) is Douglas Sima (Margate CC), Jarrod van Wyk (Port Shepstone CC), Gary Purtell (Southbroom GC), Malcolm Greenland (Southbroom GC), Derick Zolyomi (Southbroom GC), Keagan Burton (Soutbroom GC), Vusi Maphumulo (Margate CC), Wonderboy Nxumalo (Margate CC).

In terms of Handicap League, here’s a quick update.

April 30: The match between Margate and Selborne was postposed due to a flooded course.

May 7: San Lameer v Southbroom, match postponed.

May 21: Port Shepstone halved with Umdoni Park, 6-6. Selborne had a walkover against San Lameer.

May 28: Southbroom beat Umdoni Park 8-4. Port Shepstone beat Margate 10-2.

The next round is scheduled for June 11, unless respective captains have agreed to alternate dates.

Let Gary Leader know your results. Just a reminder that when rearranging fixtures, please ensure all your games are completed by the end of August.
