Ugu District volleyballers excel at provincial games

THE Ugu District Volleyball squad excelled at the 2017 KZN Schools’ Provincial Winter Games held in Durban recently. A total of 12 districts from the province participated in the various codes of sport. Ugu District volleyball was represented by both male and female players in the U13, U15 and U17 divisions.

The U15 and U17 sections served as a selection tournament to assemble a provincial team for the South African Schools’ tournament in July while the U13 section was a knockout structured tournament.

The U13 players performed extremely well, with both teams emerging from the group stages as group winners. All these players were participating in a provincial tournament for the first time, but took on this daunting task with excellent skill, composure and confidence.

The U13 boys, unfortunately, lost narrowly in the quarter-finals. The girls made it all the way to the finals, but finished runners-up. These results show that the future of Ugu District Volleyball is looking promising.

In the senior sections, three players were selected for each of the KZN U17 and U15 male teams with a further five players from across the various divisions selected as back-up players.

All eleven players will attend a training clinic later this month before the July National tournament. Ugu District coach, Clinton Pillay, was appointed the KZN boys’ U15 head coach.

Although players were monitored for their individual talent, their ability to be a team player served as one of the important criteria for the selection panel. This sense of teamwork was instilled into the Ugu District players by the vastly experienced and talented management and coaching staff.
