‘Super Oreo Brothers’ take top honours at Tweni Twos surf competition

THE first ever Tweni Twos pairs surfing competition and beach fun run was a huge success last Saturday. Ten pairs of the best surfers from all over KZN competed for R12 000 in prize money, making it one of the most lucrative surfing events in South Africa, while those who preferred the dry land entered the four-kilometre beach run.

A gloriously sunny day provided good surfing conditions, although, by the afternoon a strong wind had made conditions tricky for the finalists.

The day was not without incident as Thomas Nathan was rudely punctuated by the ‘full stop,’ a fearful rock that has tripped up many a surfer, especially those from out of town.

Drikus Lubbe will have to replace his board, which snapped in two. Chief surfing judge, and chairman of Ugu Surfriders, Wade Botha, kept the spectators entertained with a classic surfing commentary throughout the day.

The organisers-sponsored surfers Zamane Gcwensa and Mhlengi Mbutho from the Umzumbe All Stars, drummed up the crowd support with their tenacity and impressive moves.

The semi-finals saw some big-name surfers in the form of Dan Redman and Andrew Banks narrowly eliminated by the local Tweni pairing of Calvin Moore and Andrew Lange, while in the other semi-final, another local pairing of Nicholas Njapha and Byran Wigmore knocked out the former double World Masters Ladies Champion Heather Clark and partner Rene Terblanche.

The final was a closely fought affair, with the ‘Super Oreo Brothers’, Nicholas Njapha and Byran Wigmore, narrowly taking a payout of R10 000 while the runners-up team of ‘The Bowl Raiders’, Calvin and Andrew, bagged the second prize of R2 000.

Twenty participants from all age groups took part in the four-kilometre beach fun run. The overall winner was Jabulani Majombozi who was overjoyed with the R1 000 prize money.

The first women in was Danielle Hersch-Castos with Jonose Londile being the first male junior. Member of South Coast Striders, Megan Adams was the first female junior.

After a long and tiring but enjoyable day, surfers and runners descended into Champagne Shack for the presentation evening where they were entertained by local legend Ian Jones and the band Four 5 Seconds.

In a final twist to the extremely successful day, the raffle prize, a Ryan Marko custom-made surfboard was won by Clint Kendal who was unaware that he even had a ticket as Di Currie had bought it for him. He donated the prize to local surfing hero Derek Horlock for his trip to the South African Surfing Championships. The generosity of our community is never-ending.
