Groms surf up a storm under the watchful eye of former champ Heather Clark

Interest in the sport is growing, which is fantastic news.

SOMETHING special is happening in the world of surfing on the South Coast.

While the coast is home to some of the country’s top surfers of yesteryear (Heather Clark and Ant Brodowicz come to mind) interest in the sport had fizzled out.

But now, with some backing from Ugu, there’s been a revival of sorts, with a bunch of young surfers taking to their boards and paddling out.

Heather Clark’s enthusiastic coaching has seen the sport pick up – what a privilege to have such a big name in the sport right here to give back to the next generation.

In addition, the Wave of Hope surf school in Trafalgar, under the care of Philani Sikobi, has provided a home for a number of ‘development’ surfers in that area.

What’s been interesting to note is that many of the local children’s parents are not really surfers themselves. But they are involved in the collective progress of this young bunch.

Jordan Boshoff of St Mike’s is ranked 14th in the U14 age group.

St Mike’s beach is a world famous venue and played host to the Sea Harvest GromComp last Saturday.

It was well supported with junior surfers from around the country taking part.

The locals found it tough going against some quality opposition, but the experience will have done them the world of good.

The Ugu Surfriders team will be announced soon.
