‘Mandela Marathon here we come’

The focus will be on fun and finishing.

MEMBERS of the Ugu Athletics Club are getting ready to take part in the iconic Mandela Day Marathon this Sunday, August 27.

The race, considered something of a pilgrimage to many for the history behind it all, starts in Pietermaritzburg and finishes in Howick.

Some 34 Ugu members will take part on the day, 12 will do the full marathon, 18 will run the half-marathon and four will do the 10km event.

Club member, Selvanathan ‘Eddie’ Ramaloo warned that the course is “tough” and must be treated with respect.

“There are many hills to climb, in particular the deceptively difficult ‘Struggle Hill’, which stretches 16km and ends at the highest point of the race,” he said.

He also reminded athletes that the mandate has always been clear: enjoying the race and finishing it.
