From the bowling greens: Greenkeepers show some serious skill
News and results from South Coast bowling clubs.
SOME incredible talent came to the fore at the annual Greenkeepers’ Pairs Tournament held at The Bell last Wednesday.
Winners were Hans van der Walt and Sydney Sima from Margate BC.
KBA will now be looking at holding this tournament at least twice a year in the future.

The Champion of Champions will be held at Riverside this weekend, so come and support your club’s champion.
Due to unforeseen circumstances the 2017 Ugu South Coast Bowls Fest has been postponed.
BANNERS REST
A WELL supported Warwick Day mixed trips was played last Wednesday and won by Ron Camps, Lyn Walton and Hennie van der Poel.
Placed second were Gino Alilovic, Steve Rennie and Pat Brand.
Third were Dice Graaff, Rob Lyle and Jenny Rennie, and fourth John Keppler, Penny Hood and Maureen van der Poel.
The 50/50 board went to Bill McGow. A huge thank you to our sponsor, and the women who provided the after-game snacks.
The LSC 2-4-2 mixed pairs tournament for the five days ending Friday, September 1 will see the green closed thereafter for annual maintenance.
A date for re-opening of the green will be advised in due course.
HIBBERDENE
AFTER the funeral service of Maureen Jonker, the bowlers congregated at the club for the wake.
This was followed by the nominated mixed trips sponsored by Suzuki South Coast which was won by Bez and Bubbles Bezuidenhout, with Lorraine van Heerden.
Second were Arthur and Miriam Seager with Silvia Pretorius. Session was won by Norman and Judy Aiston, with Rentie Stevens.
This competition was followed by the AGM. President remains John Hoyer, vice president and treasurer is Albert Munnik, with Judy Hoyer the secretary.
Women’s singles champion is Gail van Nikkelen-Kuyper, and the men’s singles champ is Brian Pirie.
MARGATE BC
GOOD bowling to Gordon Ogilvie and Jessica Henderson at the Champion of Champions this weekend.
Social bowls is played every Sunday morning, from 9am. Dress is casual, bowls and assistance provided.
Duties: office – Allison Dinning; tea – Leza Edwards/Barbara Iceton.
MUNSTER
KRAFTY Chameleon mixed trips is today (24th). On tea duty are Margaret Moakes, Trish Houbert and Rick Harding.
Greens close this Saturday (26th) so come and join in for the last tabs in of the season.
Alison Dinning and Derek Mckechnie get ready for Ramsgate Lions’ Bowls Day on Sunday, September 3 at 9.30am. Come join the Lions for a day of fun on the ‘lawns’. Bring your friends, family and colleagues. Great prizes to be won. There will be teams of four and a ‘bring and braai’ afterwards. Bring your own meat, salads and pap will be R20 at the club. KOBUS Faber, Sharon Scheinberg and Ferro van Greunen won the Nomads game at Margate BC last Sunday.
Runners-up were Dave Slippers, Myra Doubell and Eric Chamier, followed by Heather Roberts, Neville Philpott and Manny Piquito.
Sportsman prize went to Derick McKechnie, Marie Pick and Marie Rogers.
Nearest the jack was Anthony Card, 50/50 went to Rennie Geyer. Next outing is at Southbroom on September 10.
Ferro van Greunen and Anthony Card represented Lower South Coast Nomads at the recent nationals in Van der Bijl Park, where Ferro emerged the winner.
PORT EDWARD
GAWIE Bosman, Mac McKenzie and Sariena Ziervogel won the Reality Port Edward mixed trips last week.
Runners-up were Piet Heunis, Val Smith and Rina Fourie.
Session went to Dave Banks, with Dan and Hazel Delaney. Board to Barry Payn.
Office bearers for the 2017/2018 season are Rob Lyle (president), Barry Payn (vice president), Francien van der Merwe (treasurer), Val Smith (secretary), Jokkie van Buuren (greenkeeper), Marianne van Buuren (housekeeping), Ken Simm (development), Derek Wicks (bar manager).
It was agreed that Leoni Booth (competition secretary) and Hennie van der Poel (competition sssistant) will be co-opted.
SOUTHBROOM
STEVE Rennie, Aubrey Hood and John Keppler won the Tiago’s men’s trips last Tuesday.
Runners-up were Graham Fisher, Nico Mantoan and Steve Evans.
Sessions went to Alfred Shusha, Trebla Lansdell and Wynand Bezuidenhout, as well as Ivan Hosken, Norman Isherwood and Carl Volker.
50/50 to Graham Fisher. Bring and braai this Sunday (27th) at 10am.
SOUTHPORT
GOOD luck to Cosmos Gumede and Jane Massam at the Champion of Champions this weekend.
The winners of the Dr. Darryl D’Arcy men’s trips were Peet van Rooyen, Phil Viljoen and Kevin Mullen.
Runners-up were Mike King, Bob Moroney and Werner Mody. Session winners were Alan Jacobson, Duncan Randall and Hew Hodgson.
Suzuki women’s trips today (24th).
Umtentweni won the Fellowship Trophy against Southport last Sunday.
THE BELL
CONGRATULATIONS to Sharolyn Dacey, Barbara Fernihough, Charmaine Vermeulen and Maureen Head who came third in the Scottburgh August Tournament.
Also, well done to the men’s team of Louw Vermeulen, Peet van Rooyen, Claude Ching and Steve O’Moore who won a session prize.
Winners of the Venture Inn/Jaxx open trips were Sharolyn Dacey, Charmaine Vermeulen and Angela Moor’house.
Runners-up were Don Wiid, Annette Sutter and Eleanor Frizelle. Second session was won by Luke Pohl, Johannie Theron and David Nicholas.
Many thanks to Joan and Willy Knott for ensuring that the Greenkeepers’ Tournament went smoothly.
Greens staff, Christopher Danca and Andile Basie, played very well with Duncan Randall and Willy Knott.
The winners were Margate with Sezela runners-up. The AGM will be held on September 2 at 3pm.
TWENI
DAPHNE Hounsell and Trudy Rush won the Wimpy women’s pairs from runners-up Sharolyn Dacey and Tina Barbour. The session prize went to Susan Delpech and Lyn Harris.
The Southport-Umtentweni Fellowship competition was won by Umtentweni by a mere two points.
Tony Aveyard is playing in the Champion of Champions this weekend.
Wimpy/Club mixed fours will be this Friday (25th) at 9am. The Horse Racing evening will be held next Wednesday (30th) at 5.30pm for 6pm.
VILLAGE
WINNERS of the Martin Electronics men’s 2-4-2 were Andrea Blignaut and Rennie Geyer, followed by Denzil Massyn and Gary Hess.

Sessions went to Chris Allen and Geoff Oliver and to Martiens Olivier and Billy Eccles. Hein Bester won the 50/50.
Winners of the Hyundai drawn mixed trips were Alan Tyers, Marie Momple and Winston van Greune, followed by Trevor Anderson, Rosalie Bloom and Bill Reed.
The RAC draw and bring and braai will be on Friday, September 1.
The Food Lover’s Market drawn mixed trips will be played on Saturday, September 2 at 1.15pm.
Next competitions are Hibiscus Retirement Villages men’s trips on September 5 and Hibiscus Brokers’ mixed trips on September 14.
