Quiz, burgers and a whole lot of fun at Umkomaas Golf Club
Our Allerton League team takea on Ethekweni in their next round this Sunday and, if they play as well they did last time, Ethekweni is in for a surprise! Good luck, guys. You are on home ground, so it should be a breeze!
THE club hosted a very successful quiz evening last Friday night, thanks to the club’s new marketing lady, Yuvrika Gurunand. Great fun was had by everyone and for all those people who missed out on burgers, apologies – there will be plenty next time around. There is a Bingo Nite planned for Friday, March 23, and, if the quiz evening is anything to go by, it too will be a huge success. Well done YuVee on a job well done!
The club welcomed Dave Rickards and Mervyn Painter to the competition last Wednesday and, once again, we have a new winner!
Well done to Alwyn Stander, who cruised into first place with 39 points followed by Strand Striker, Roddy McGibbon with 37 points. Taking the last prize on offer was Wally Kent on 35.
Saturday, February 24, saw the first round of the alliance league, welcoming visitors Renzo Avellini, Russell McKelly, Dave Rickards, Rudi Kneissl and Margrit Petritsch to the fourball alliance game. Nice to see Mike and Sandy Cromhout at the club and also new member, Julian Rivetti. Welcome, one and all.

In first place, on a great score of 98 points were the ‘BEEE Team’ – Bruce Sutcliffe, Sean Prendergast, Kuben Naidoo and Patrick Ndlovu with the ‘Dream Team’ – Sabiha Bacaus, Jacques Hulley, Graham Coxell and Dave Shepherd second with 91 points. Taking third place was ‘Flower Power’ – Keith and Lesa Vergottini with Peter and Linda Toward on 90 points.
Patrick Ndlovu won the jackpot with 12 points but the hidden birdie (third hole) and the attendance draw (Jacques Kirstein) will be carried over to next weekend.
Nearest the pins on the short holes were Chris Pillay (fourth), Joseph Mkhungo (ninth), Kuben Naidoo (13th) and Bruce Sutcliffe (17th). There was only one two-club from Mike Cromhout on the fourth hole.
The Monthly Medal and Mug for both men and women will be played this Saturday (March 3), Sean Prendergast’s 50th birthday. There will braai fires lit so if you would like to join him in celebrating this milestone birthday, bring your meat along and help push him into his 50s! (Please let Dawn know if you want braai packs). Naturally, the bar will be open, but please make sure you have a sober driver to get you home.
As always, the ‘Early Bird Special’ is on Tuesdays and Fridays only, at R75 per player before 7.30am. Call the club to book (039-9731042), especially if you need a cart. Also on a Friday is six-pin in the afternoon from around 2.30pm – there is a strong possiblity that there will be braai/boere rolls on offer to buy after your round. Come on down and enjoy a sociable evening with friends.
It’s never too early to mention the Sardine Run which is in June – all the information can be found on the website or at the offices of the three participating clubs – Umkomaas, Scottburgh or Selborne. The website is www.sardinegolf.co.za – carts will only be securely booked after full payment, so, if you need a cart, book now!
The scribe, ‘P Utter’, is retiring after 10 years at the club, but the reports will now be done every week by ‘YuVee@Umkomaas’ – look out for these reports, they will still be informative as always. Thank you to all who read my report every week, letting me know if I have done a good job or not! I will miss the weekly deadlines but will still be around to help out where I can around the club in the months ahead.
It’s not a good-bye, merely an “Au Revoir” for now. Thank you all for taking the time to read my report every week, I appreciated the input!
The club’s website, with all our information, can be found at www.umkomaasgolf.co.za
