Runs galore as Southern KZN cricketers smash Tongaat
The locals overpowered their hapless opponents.
IT was carnage for Tongaat bowlers at Port Shepstone Country Club last Sunday as Southern KwaZulu-Natal’s batsmen hit the ball to every boundary and beyond.
Tongaat won the toss and elected to bowl in this Level 2 Challenge (50 overs).
Southern KZN made 399 for 4 in 46 overs and ended up winning by 231 runs.
Matt Redinger led the way with 86, while Uzair Desai chippped in with 23. Sachin Kalkapersad made 41 and Gareth Bishop 64 not out.
It was wicket-keeper Ashley Lombard who provided a middle-order thrust, with a rapid-fast 95 before being bowled trying to hit one into the ocean.
Raja Kazi also got in on the action, with 54 not out to boost his average.
It was always going to be an impossible task for Tongaat to reach that score.
In the end they managed 168 all out. To their credit they did not throw away their wickets and lasted 40 overs.
Sahal Mansur was the destroyer-in-chief, taking five for 20 in his 10 overs.
The other wickets were picked up by Bishop (1-27), Kazi (1-31), Danie Kleinhans (1-31), Gershion Lawrence (1-20) and Zeyn Moosa (1-8).

* In local league cricket, Kings XI beat Gamalakhe CC by 38 runs at Sezela.
Kings batted first and made 196 all out, with Innocent Zulu taking 5-50 and Sbonelo Shinga 3-52.
In reply Gamalakhe managed 158-9, with Malusi Jalubani top-scoring with 63 not out.
Samkelo Vezi contributed with 43 but the rest struggled.
