Baker’s best at Margate Country Club strokeplay champs
The north-easterly wind made things fairly interesting.
SEAN Baker won the men’s strokeplay club championships at Margate Country Club last weekend.
It’s now the second time he has done so, having won two years ago, and he made it a whole lot easier than the lengthy playoff he needed last time around against Patrick Mavundla.

He shot 70 on the Saturday, tied with evergreen Ivan Curlewis, who is nudging towards 70 in age, but still swinging it like Bernhard Langer.
Sunday was a different story as Baker put some distance between himself and the rest to win by five shots shooting 73 to total 143.
But it was close for a while, with Curlewis two ahead after 27 holes. He then unfortunately made a triple bogey on the 10th.
Baker finished strongly with birdies on the 13th, 15th and 17th.
Curlewis had 78 to tie for second place with Ronnie Mtshaka, who had 76 and 72.
The B division champion was John Webster on consistent scores of 83 and 82. He’s lost out in a playoff before so this was a sweet win.
He was three ahead of Gary Smith who had 83 and 85.
C division champ was Greg Litkie on 70 points by four from AB Sidumo.
Saturday prizes went to Curlewis (A division nett 67), Robin Shuttleworth (B division nett 67 nett), Michael Downs (C division 37 points).
Sunday prizes went to Sydney Shingange (A division nett 66), Peter Hunter (B division nett 67) and John Crewe (C division 35 points).
In the women’s section, Grace Fourie won by seven shots on 183 for the 36 holes.
Silver division honours went to Sandi Johnston on 190 gross, and bronze division to Agnes Spielman, 193 gross,
Runner-up in the silver was Wilma Olkers on 191 gross.
Saturday best nett was Jane Davies on nett 74. Sunday best nett was Julie Gerber on nett 72.
Respective runners-up were Joan Minnaar on nett 78 and Rina Rito on nett 77.
The Wednesday Wobblers game last Wednesday was won on 81 points by Alan Davies, André Henn and Konnie Konrad, by two from Rob McGill, Eddie Gommersall and Johan Holshof.
Last Thursday’s competition was won by Friedl Kotzbauer on 43 points, with Fanie Terblanche and Eddie Davies next on 41 points.
