Comrades record holder joins Striders for training run
The local runners were able to see just how talented the past champion still is.
THE local South Coast Striders enjoyed a special treat last Saturday, running with the ‘one-and-only’ David Gatebe, winner of the 2016 Comrades Marathon.
Thanks to the organisational skills of club captain Mark Smith, David joined about 35 Striders on their 50km training run from Port Shepstone to Hibberdene and back last Saturday.

David is an elite athlete and holds the record for the Comrades Marathon down run in a blistering time of 05:18, set in 2016.
He also won the 2013 Two Oceans Ultra.
He was on the South Coast to do some training at sea level and was pleased to join the group of Striders.

David did not fail to deliver, setting the pace for the front pack on the first half, but pulling away on the second half to complete the 50km training run in 03:05.
The Striders were honoured to run in the presence of this true South African running legend.
David said he was impressed with the level of the runners and even more impressed with the spirit among the members.

Graeme Milligan from Harbour View SuperSpar was thanked for the generous donation of water and juices for the run and then the delicious burgers afterwards.
