World champion karate master visits South Coast
Manabu Murukami started practising karate at the age of nine years.
WORLD renowned Japanese karate grandmaster, two-times world champion and 8th Dan master, Manabu Murukami, conducted a training session for all karatekas at Port Shepstone Secondary School hall last Sunday. Working in conjunction with local Shihan Frank Moodley, the training session helped teach self-discipline and socialisation skills.

Shihan Moodley told the Herald that Grandmaster Murukami was born in Kyushu, an island off the south of Japan. “He started practising karate at the age of nine years with Japan Karate Association’s (JKA) instructor Sensei Maruo. When Soke Hirokazu Kanazawa formed Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation (SKIF), he immediately joined the organisation in the ’70s,” explained Shihan Moodley.
He pointed out that at 18 years Grandmaster Murakami studied at Takusoku University in Tokyo, where Soke Kanazawa had studied previously.
Grandmaster Murakami reminded karatekas: “You should have fun practising karate and if you motivate yourself you will get better each time. Look for that motivation which will stimulate you to enjoy it, then you will go far.”
Karatekas thanked Shihan Moodley for being instrumental in bringing Japanese talent to the South Coast on a regular basis.
