Taking part in the race was the Herbalife Nutrition bLU cRU Yamaha development team consisting of two up-and-coming development riders, Piwe Zulu and Thabang Katees.

Zulu (33), who is from Gamalakhe on the South Coast, was ‘super excited’ to take part in this legendary race.

The double-header event meant little rest for the riders between the two rounds and to make things more challenging, a cold front passed over the area in the days leading up to event.

There was widespread rainfall on the route the Thursday evening before the first day’s racing, making the course even more treacherous.

Friday morning for Round 4 saw a cold and wet start to the event and due to the heavy rains and swollen rivers, the routes were cut short to make sure the competitors could successfully navigate a full lap.

Zulu dug deep during the course of a very long day and managed to finish on the podium in third place in the silver class.

It was his first podium in a National Enduro Championship and he was very pleased.

Saturday saw the start of Round 5 with the organisers putting the route in the reverse direction.

Zulu set off to complete the four laps required for the silver class.

After fighting hard for most of the day he was unfortunately time-barred at the end of his third lap and could not be classified as a finisher.

However, there was a high level of retirements for both days and Zulu can be proud of his efforts in very trying conditions.
