Herald Fishing: Teenager boats winning fish at Interzonals

The triumphant team was made up of Owen Barclay, Joel Egling and captain Abed Kahn.

Owen Barclay (14) starred for Southern KwaZulu-Natal at the KwaZulu-Natal Deep Sea Angling Association Interzonals bottom fishing competition at Warner Beach last weekend.

The Shelly Beach teenager played a major role in helping his team win the competition.

The triumphant team was made up of Barclay, Joel Egling and captain Abed Kahn.

Owen went on to claim the individual angler of the competition award ahead of the best senior and junior anglers in the province.

Ivan Kotze from #TeamPortEdward landed this massive grey shark recently.

His top catches were a 14.92kg red steenbrass last Friday, a 13.95kg red steenbrass last Saturday and a 13.26kg black steenbrass last Sunday. He fished with a 10kg line.

The rock and surf fishermen have really started to get excited around the first few hauls of summer inedibles.

This, combined with the good edibles that have been coming out, means the action has been hot!

Garrick has made an appearance and these gamely fighters have been falling for a live shad, and a few have been taken on surface plugs.

A popular spot to catch them has been at Sandspit in Port Shepstone. Anglers are also catching a lot of kob at Sandspit in the evenings.

Bronze bream and black bream are also plentiful. Best times to fish is when there is incoming and outgoing water.

Bass anglers are also busy as the bass are beginning to feed.
