Indomitable Doug racks up Nomads records
Doug Milne has created a Nomads record that is unlikely ever to be matched.
Doug Milne is something of a Nomads icon and he added to that legend by completing his 650th game for Nomads, at Southbroom Golf Club last week.

That’s right… 650, an eye-popping number is unlikely to be repeated in Nomads anywhere in the world, ever.
He was invited to join the then Transvaal Nomads in March 1961, never dreaming that 57 years and nine months later he would still be at it, playing in the monthly games every second Tuesday.

“Doug is a friend and a gentleman and encompasses everything Nomads stands for. It’s been a privilege to have been part of this special celebration,” said Roelof Meyer, the captain of Southern Natal Nomads.
He turns 88 today (October 18, 2018).
A quantity surveyor by trade, he is meticulous in everything he does, as is evidenced in the detailed statistics he keeps.

He was part of Transvaal Nomads for eight years before transferring to Natal Nomads where he was a member for 30 years, serving as captain in 1989 and later receiving honorary membership.
Doug later transferred to Southern Natal where he has been for the past 19 years or so, having been on the committe for 14 years. Another honorary membership was awarded to him.
Doug has played 48 Nationals, winning the Over 55s in 1988. He played two Rhodesian Nationals, four Zimbabwe Nationals, and one Botswana and Swaziland Nationals each.

At today’s costs, when you add up game fees, 100-Club, halfway house snacks, caddy fees, a round of drinks afterwards and other sundries, he has spent well over R500 000. And that’s excluding Nomads kit, petrol and the like.
Sounds like a lot? Not when it can be paid off in 650 easy installments!
