Ugu District celebrates improved matric pass rate
The district achieved an overall 79.6 percent pass rate - up by six percent from 2017's 73.08 percent.
Ten schools in the Ugu District recorded a 100 percent matric pass rate for 2018, a performance which saw the district place second in KwaZulu-Natal.
The department of education said this was ‘a massive improvement’ on the 2017 results when only three school managed a 100 percent pass rate.

On his recent whistle-stop tour of the South Coast, president Cyril Ramaphosa praised the district for its hard work, saying this was an achievement worth celebrating and commended the schools for their dedication in shaping the leaders of tomorrow.
Ugu District achieved an overall 79.6 percent pass rate – up by six percent from 2017’s 73.08 percent.
Schools in the district with a perfect pass rate were Bhekameva High, Emgangeni Secondary, Mqhakama High, Mtumaseli High, Port Shepstone Islamic, Sizathina Junior Secondary, Thembuzulu Secondary, Tholisu Secondary, Umzinto Islamic and Wesbury College of Science.
Two pupils from Port Shepstone Secondary, Tineal Govender and Ntombizekhethelo Mbube, were placed in the district’s top five.
Scottburgh High’s Ashraf Moosa and Samiska Amichund and Marburg Secondary’s Intle Bebula rounded off the list.
Head of examinations in the Ugu District, Nkosinathi Madadi, said the department of education extended its appreciation to everyone involved in preparing pupils for the 2018 examinations.
“Over the years results are constantly improving. The performance by the district is thanks to the tireless effort of teachers working day and night, sacrificing their holidays and time with their families.
“As they celebrate their achievement we want to encourage them to go back and redouble their efforts in 2019.”
