Close call for cricketers
When Southerns took the field, they believed they could win.
Southern KwaZulu-Natal’s cricketers beat Topham in Chatsworth last Sunday in the Promotion A league, but it was far too close for comfort, with a victory margin of only 11 runs.
The visitors batted first on a pitch described in the captains’ report as ‘poor’. They struggled, being bowled out for 122.
Top scorer was Morné Bishop on 36, with Gershion Lawrence next on 22.
The only other batsmen to get into double figures were Alviro Nadasen (17), Meshen Lanka (12) and Matt Redinger (11).
There was no Ashley Lombard for this game, so the batting was a little more vulnerable than usual.
However, when Southerns took the field, they believed they could win, especially with their potent spin trio comprising Sajid Tai, Raja Kazi and Lawrence.
They picked up eight of the nine wickets, with Redinger getting one and there being a run-out.
Kazi took 3-5 in four overs, making up for a duck when batting. Tai took 3-25 and Lawrence 2-29.
