The Southern KZN Veteran’s cricket team, newcomers to the KZN Veteran’s Promotion League, have made a pretty good start.
In their first match two weeks ago, they took on Tongaat at Chatsworth, with the game ending in a dramatic tie.
What an introduction!
It was probably a match they could have (should have?) won but such is the game of cricket.
Tongaat batted first and made 174-4 in their 20 overs.
Saeed Patel took 2-26 (4) and Ayoob Ebrahim 1-23 (4).
The other wicket came via a run out, courtesy of wicketkeeper Andre Ellapen who displayed startling athleticism to run the batsman out when they had tried to take a leg bye.
In reply, the Vets started well but were eventually pegged back by Tongaat’s Priyesh Bachu who took 5-18 (4).
Runs were made by Shaun Ferreira 55 (23), Andre Ellapen 33 (16), Ayoob Ebrahim 30* (32), Wilko Kunz 17 (14), Neven Pillay 11 (13) and Junaid Mall 11 (16).
The game ebbed and flowed with the Vets needing 10 off the last, and ultimately falling one short of victory.
A week later they played Meadowridge Sporting Club away and cleaned up comfortably by eight wickets.
Meadowridge batted first and made 81 all out 16.3 overs.
Three bowlers picked up two wickets apiece, namely Yega Katharian 2-1 (1.3), Andre Ellapen 2-10 (2) and Saeed Patel 2-13 (3).
Others to take a wicket were Shaun Ferreira 1-15 (2), Beez Habib 1-3 (2) and Ayoob Ebrahim 1-5 (2).
Next game is against Rhythm C at home this Saturday.
