Entries now open for iconic marathon

The race always attracts many athletes, both locally and from out of the area, because of the scenic coastal route which really showcases the area’s natural beauty.

ONE of the province’s most iconic marathons will be returning to the Upper South Coast shores on Sunday, October 27, with the starting time set for 5.30am for all the three race categories.

Early entries for this year’s Goss & Balfe Sapphire Coast Marathon can be made online at webtickets.co.za or at any Pick n Pay, until Sunday, September 15.

“The annual Goss & Balfe Sapphire Coast Marathon continues to grow every year and for this – the 30th edition – we are anticipating around 3 000 to 3 500 competitors,” said Charles Botha, chairman of the Amanzimtoti Athletics Club (AAC), organisers of the event.

The marathon is an early qualifier for both the Comrades Marathon 2020 as well as the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon 2020.

On race day, there will be parking available at the civic centre with buses running from Civic Lane to the three separate starting points.

The 10km run starts at Illovo Beach with a 2-hour-and-a-half-hour cut-off. The buses for 10km will run from 4.15am to 4.45am.

The 21.1km half-marathon will run from Ilfracombe Station with a 3-and-a-half-hour cut-off. Buses run from 4am to 4.30am.

The 42.2km marathon starts at Scottburgh Station with a 6-hour cut-off. Buses will run from 3.30am to 4.15am.
